I heard a lot of people say that the final installment of the Hobbit was a bit disappointing and over the top, but I genuinely thought it was good. Checked it out a couple of days ago, and I can’t see anything wrong with it. Sure, the moment when Legolas defies gravity video-game-style is pretty hilarious, but let’s not forget he weighs less than a feather, and what’s wrong with a bit of laughter? And okay, there was one point in the movie where I’m pretty sure one of the side actors was wearing a quite modern beanie with lamas on it (how could they not see that? LAMAS, people. LAMAS!). Let’s hope it was just my imagination (I’ll be able to confirm or refute when it’s out on DVD).
To me, it’s a vast improvement compared to the first Hobbit (Trolls singing? Really? Felt like a Disney movie). Overall I think the Hobbit series went a little overboard on color improvements and fantasy, making it less tough and rough than the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It felt more like a Tim Burton adaptation and fairytale than a masculine and edgy adventure flick. And adjusting Legolas’ eyes wasn’t necessary: If they couldn’t bother doing it right in Lord of the Rings, it shouldn’t have been done in the Hobbit. It just felt weird and unnatural.
I still think Lord of the Rings is way better than the Hobbit, but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the latter. And it’s great movie marathon material. Especially useful for people who can relate to Gollem and would like to stay hidden in a cave all day avoiding people. Filthy hobbitses.
